Alexander Camaro

Alexander Camaro, aka Alphons Bernhard Kamarofski (1901 - 1992) was a German painter and dancer.
At a young age he joined a circus group and performed as a high rope artist. Between 1920 and 1925 Camaro studied painting at the State Academy of Arts and Crafts in Wroclaw.

From 1929 to 1930 he attended the "Wigman school" of Mary Wigman in Dresden as a dance student. In Wigman's choreography on Albert Talhoff's "Totenmale" from 1930, he performed as a soloist. As a painter, Camaro was banished from 1933 until the end of the Nazi dictatorship with a ban on working and exhibiting, so that during this time he was able to cover his livelihood only through dance. Together with his partner Liselore Bergmann, Camaro danced at different stages in Germany. During the Second World War, they toured the fronts in Russia and Crete. Camaro went into hiding in 1944 to escape the war service.
